“Photo dump” “2021 dump” “Birthday dump” “Gallery dump”
These seem familiar, don’t they?
We have been seeing a lot of people posting the most random pictures on their social media with these captions.
But what exactly is a photo dump? It is a carousel post on Instagram which needs the least efforts, i.e. selecting photos at random, but also conveys a story or a mood. And for some reason, photo dumps always look aesthetically pleasing.
Almost everyone has hopped onto the photo dump trend but not many know how, when and by whom was it originated. It was a 22-year-old college student named Claudia Langella when the pandemic hit and the world went into lockdown when she started rethinking her relationship with social media. In an interview, she spoke about how she used to care about how the grid looked on her Instagram, but after the pandemic, she said, “I think slowing down in 2020 and seeing my camera roll fill up with squares of more ordinary in-the-moment pictures made me want to post the things that I genuinely found appealing. Instagram became more fun when I started approaching it as a casual place to share my life.”
It wasn’t just us youth who hopped onto this trend, many celebrities like Bella Hadid, Dua Lipa, Megan Thee Stallion, Demi Lovato and so many more have also joined us on the trend.
There is something satisfying about posting a bunch of pictures at random without really caring about how it makes the ‘grid’ look. The photo dump trend kind of normalized capturing ‘life’ in its truest form, random and unexpected. A picture does more than capture something, it tells us a story.
